How to become body positive in 7 easy steps!

Body positivity is slowly making its way into the mainstream. You've probably seen it in Buzzfeed articles, on Tumblr, on Facebook and it's all over your Instagram feed. But one question remains; how does one became body positive?


Despite the fact that there's no wrong  way to be body positive. It can be hard to figure out where to start especially when loving yourself seems impossible. That's why I decided to make a list of all the steps I took to become the confident women I am today. To get you started on your self-love journey, here are the 10 easy steps to become body positive (according to me.)

1. Look at yourself in the mirror

It can helpful to spend time with and look at your naked body and accepting it just as it is without judgment. When I'm feeling body negative or just in a ''blah'' mood, looking at myself actually helps me feel better. I always picture my body and my ''flaws'' as way worse than they actually are. Most of the time, exposing that part of my body or that ''flaw'' helps me realize that I do, in fact, love my body. Believe it or not, this will help over time.

2. Surround yourself with body positivity

Whether it's following body positive role models on Instagram and YouTube or just surrounding yourself with positive people. It will be easier to feel good about yourself and your body if you are around others who are supportive and who recognize the importance of liking yourself just the way you are. Seeing others opening about their own struggles and embracing their flaws in empowering and inspirational. This is something that personally really helped me. Bonus points if you can find someone who has a similar body type as you!

3. Shut down ''the voices''

You know what I'm talking about, THE voices in your head that keeps telling you that your body is not “right” or that you are a “bad” person. You can overpower those negative thoughts with positive ones. The next time you start to tear yourself down, build yourself back up with compliments and positive affirmations. Even if you don't believe it at first, this will eventually come naturally to you while the bad voices slowly dissapears.

4. Get rid of the negativity

Toss the scale, the lifestyle magazines, that pair of  jeans you’ve kept, and anything else that makes you feel bad about your body. Those are bad habits you have developped and became addicted to, despite how bad they make you feel about yourself. You're not alone we're all been there, but now it's time to get rid of them and replace them with something more positive. A scale can be replaced with a measuring tape to track your body measurements rather than weight, lifestyle magazines can be replaced with ''feel good'' books and journals (I recommend Rupi Kaur Milk and Honey), and that old pair of jeans can be replaced with a new pair of jeans that fit and flatter the shape you have right now!

5. Appreciate all that your body can do.

Every day your body carries you closer to your dreams.  Celebrate all of the amazing things your body does for you— You can see colors. You can feel warmth. You can run and walk and dance. Your body automatically knows how to repair itself when it gets scratched or wounded. I'm in awe when I think deeply about myself as a living, breathing human being. Your body is pretty amazing. The list can go on and on, and it can really lift your spirits during those times when your negative voices starts to get in the way of your positive mindset.

6. Affirm your own beauty and compliment yourself as often as needed.

I had a really hard time with this one. My parents and family always considered people who compliment themselves as narcissistic and that kind of stuck with me. It made it hard for me to accept compliments and acknowledge my own beauty from fear of sounding self- absorbed, but here's the thing: I am fucking beautiful and so are you!!!

I say this not just because it's true, but because it's something you need and deserve to hear often. The moment we say something out loud, it feels real. Verbalizing your feelings makes it more three-dimensional. Tell yourself how lovely you are. Do it confidently, and do it often. You'll believe it eventually. Starting today I want you to look at yourself in the mirror every morning and say, out loud, “I am beautiful.”

7. Know that you’re body positive already and that it's okay to feel insecure sometime

You are a forceful body positive warrior, even when you're down. Knowing your insecurities and acknowledging them when they appear doesn't make you any less of a body positive person. In fact, being open to vulnerability could even help you becoming stronger. The truth is, you were already body positive before you read this blog post or tried any of those tips. There are no requirements for changing your mindset. All that matters is that you understand the motivation behind body positivity. Whether you've just decided to pursue a more body-positive lifestyle or you’ve been doing it for years, you’re still body positive, and I’m so proud of you.
